Believe it or not, the number of tissue samples in U.S. biobanks alone has been estimated to have reached more than 300 million by the turn of the century. Since that time, it's increased by about 20 million per year.

Many Facilities Have Trouble Tracking Down Quality Samples

Believe it or not, many biobanks actually have trouble getting the samples that they need. According to a 2011 survey of more than 700 cancer researchers, about 47% of cancer researchers -- nearly half -- had trouble finding biobanks samples of sufficient quality.
